Two years ago, Julie Warren, 46 and an employee at Lockheed Martin, slipped into a diabetes coma and died. Her best friend at work, Tina Linberry, 35, missed her friend so much, she decided to honor her by creating a cycling team in her name and riding to raise money at the American Diabetes Association’s Tour de Cure.
Lineberry began with 18 team members. This year, her team is up to 33.
“We had been trying to figure out how to honor her,” said Linebrry. “We talked and talked and finally came up with a team for Tour de Cure. A lot of people had to buy bikes because they didn’t ride. We also spoke to the director and she took it on as a project.”
Team Julie gathers regularly on the Trinity Trail for practice rides.
“Lineberry and Team Julie are so inspirational,” said Gina Hethcock, director of communications. “We know that they will inspire many others as well.”
The American Diabetes Association’s Tour de Cure cycling event will take place on July 23, 2011, at Texas Motor Speedway. Team captains can sign up via Internet at diabetes.org/tour.
