The American Diabetes Association of North Texas held its first Por Tu Familia training Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, at its office on 4100 Alpha Rd. in Dallas. About 10 participants learned the basics about diabetes and how to prevent and manage it with nutrition and exercise. They also learned how Latinos are diagnosed at a higher rate than non-Latino whites and how they can reverse the trend. The program is sponsored through a $15,000 grant by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas and consists of eight bilingual modules geared toward the Latino culture.
