Cause #1 – American Diabetes Association

This cause is especially near and dear to me. My mom Gale, the inspiration behind 20 Causes, 20 Days, developed Type 2 Diabetes in her mid-40s. In 2006, she passed away from complications arising from her diabetes.

Rest in peace, Mom. I miss you more every day.

She wasn’t the only one suffering from diabetes. As of 2011, 25.8 million American children and adults – 8.3% of the U.S. population – have diabetes. 18.8 million are diagnosed, 7 million are undiagnosed. It’s also estimated that 79 million people have “prediabetes” as well.

On a more local level, Texas is home to nearly 2 million people with diabetes, with more than half a million here in DFW. They say everything is bigger in Texas, and unfortunately that rings true with diabetes as well. While the national average is 8.3%, in Texas 9.7% of the population has diabetes.
