Since many students in North Texas attend public and private school establishments, the school environment inevitably plays a large role in their comprehensive health. Each year, millions of Americans are diagnosed with chronic diseases that may be preventable through modifiable behaviors and appropriate medical care. With the rate of students and school employees diagnosed with diabetes rapidly increasing, a surge in obesity, the acknowledgement of pre‐diabetes as a health priority, and the devastating effects of diabetes complications, there is an urgent need for targeted prevention and management efforts, effective information about the seriousness of diabetes, its risk factors, populations at greater risk and ways to help manage the disease is essential.
We can achieve these preventative measures by hosting a SchoolWalk to Stop Diabetes at schools in North Texas. School Walk to Stop Diabetes is an educational school fundraising program that promotes healthy living, school spirit and community involvement while raising money for diabetes research, education, and advocacy through the American Diabetes Association.
