Funds help start new women’s program.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) is proud to announce that Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) recently awarded a grant of $75,000 to fund a new women’s program called Fabulous You! in Houston and North Texas.

Fabulous YOU, a nine-month, interactive program, is designed to address diabetes management to women living with diabetes or who are at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes during their lifetime. The program, funded under the Healthy Kids, Healthy Families grant, aims to educate and empower women to make their own health a priority, and celebrate their achievements.

“Our longstanding support of community partners like the American Diabetes Association is premised on our shared vision for a healthier, more active and more productive Texas. The health and wellbeing of Texas women impacts their families, places of work and communities. In lifting them up, we are all uplifted,”   said Catherine Oliveros, Director of Community Affairs at BCBSTX.  “Through our collaboration, we look forward to seeing measurable improvements in diabetes management and prevention.”

The program’s goals call for 25 percent of women who participate in Fabulous YOU! to achieve a .5 reduction in A1C, and weight reduction of 5 to 11 pounds by the end of the program. Program participants will receive tools to take care of themselves through interactive educational diabetes sessions, including cooking demonstrations, supermarket tours, fitness demonstrations, motivational talks and much more.

The women who graduate will receive prizes and be showcased at the ADA’s annual Tea and Spring Festival in 2017.

“It is really a successful program that has been piloted elsewhere in the U.S., and now we want to try to achieve that same success here in North Texas and Houston,” said Quin Neal, Area Executive Director of the ADA in North Texas. “We have partnered with Blue Cross for several years here in the Metroplex with our Hispanic and African American Initiatives, and we are excited to start a new program that includes women of all color.”
